Hack for Change

Change.org is hosting Hack for Change on June 18th & 19th, a weekend hackathon dedicated to creating web and mobile applications that advance social change.

In advance, we’re asking people to submit ideas for social change apps they want to create or think others should work on. These will be presented to developers and designers at the beginning of the hackathon as suggestions for possible apps for development over the weekend. (Participants are also welcome to create apps based on their own ideas at the event.) For more information, go to www.hackforchange.com.

Here's a problem that needs to be solved or an idea for a social change app ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Remove the awkward from the fundraising house party and insert the fun

I want to build an app that can be used to allow anyone to hold a house party for an organization, where people can donate funding in advance to reach their goal. Those names will go directly into a donor database (like Salesforce) for the organization, and the party host will receive an awesome "party pack" once they have raised x amount of funds. The revolution should be fun and crowd-sourced!

      • Learn from my example .com

Kinda like texts from last night, but without the drunken antics.
Basically, you tell about a mistake you made, with the idea that people can not do what you did.
Or, you tell about an awesome thing that totally made your life and the lives of those around you better.

        Keep it short.

        • Help people in developing nations to sell their products directly to the world

There are many barriers for small producers and individuals to sell their products, handicrafts, or similar items. Two of the main barriers are:
          1) An easy way to create an online web-store, having no programming experience and possibly very little computer experience
          2) An easy way to accept payment for goods internationally

A possible solution for the payment portion could be bitcoin.
The online webstore could be modeled after etsy, com, which requires sellers to have a credit card.

          • An app that connects knowledgeable locals to newbies or tourists

An app that could connect tourists to people that are willing to help. The tourist would approach a helper that has a QR code on his sleeve or shirt. After scanning the code, one could confirm that this helper is indeed helpful and receive information/directions from this person (potentially for a mild incentive).

            • Make government data more accessible and actionable

Cities, such as San Francisco and Portland, have published enormous amounts of data in electronic form. It's hard for most people to understand or use this information for any kind of good. This data needs to be visualized, processed, synthesized, and related to other things to make it usable and actionable.

                • Direct Democracy Simulation

Representative democracy (which most of the countries use) is outdated. With the current internet/mobile technologies its possible to implement a direct democracy (simulation to start with) where people can vote on laws / decisions while politics can help people to make the decisions via online (or offline) media.

So a direct democracy implementation needs basicly 3 parts :
                  - mobile signuture (or any implementation of secure identity check) which is currently available with technologies we have
                  - a pool application which people can vote for local / country wise decisions
                  - an information base with explanations on the voting (and…

                  • Connect freelancers to companies, money earned goes to charity

A job-board & project-management tool (like oDesk) which connects web-enabled freelancers (writers, coders, designers, etc) with companies. The project management bit is for ticketing and time-tracking, the hourly earnings are escrowed to charities of the freelancer's choice.

Think Samasource minus outsourcing. If a company wants tech skills from local talent rather than via outsourcing (which is often the case), they would use this tool. Instead of hiring paid-for talent, they find freelancer volunteers & still gain feel-good & PR props :) The freelancer would pick up this work as do-gooder programming (the money earned goes to his chosen charity) and…

                    • A mobile app that warns you when a tornado is approaching your area.

Almost everyone has a phone and the it's possible to pretty much know where your phone is all the time (by cell tower triangulation and/or a built in GPS) so why not make a universal early warning system that ties into national weather data and will automatically alert you when you are in the danger zone. In addition to tornados and other inclement weather, the same system could be useful for tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. This should be a ubiquitous feature of cell phones (kind of like 911) but it's obviously not at this stage of the game, but it could…

People who volunteer or care about social change could have this app and some sort of profile - when they were in the proximity/company of someone similarly inclined, they would both be notified and have the opportunity to discuss what they were doing, learn from each, form connections. So much opportunity for connecting change makers!

What do the Arctic, Memphis, TN and the Southwest all have in common? They represent the hot spots in America reeling in the first impacts of a warming planet--from rising sea levels, floods, to drought. Yet, these communities, like victims of Hurricane Katrina, are dealt these environmental blows with little relief in sight. Using the concepts of Facebook, and the inviting design of Twitter, the project is meant to connect individuals, advocates and policy makers to share stories, lend advice and politically organize around the goals of improving climate relief strategies. Through existing social media technology, users will be able…

                                    • An app that creates a profile on your phone will driving.

It would use your wifi and create a bunch of adhoc networks to communicate. With this you can set what car and color you are driving, your destination and how fast you are willing to drive and even pitstops (for interstate driving or long distance). If you have a copilot this can also allow you to communicate to other cars, such as a thank you or a please let me through.

It would interface with Google Buzz and Facebook Check-in and people could announce that they are going to the groceries and either are willing to allow people to carpool or just need help. Other broadcasts things could include cutting grass or help with moving objects. Incentives or reimbursements can be tied in as well if the labor is intensive or favor great.

                                        • An app that tells you whether the coffee you want to order is fair trade or not

It's simple. Wether I'm deciding on the El Salvadoran french press or the Colombian ground by the pound at the supermarket, I want to know if it's Fair Trade (http://www.fairtradeusa.org/get-involved/promotion/make-every-cup-fair). Were the workers treated well and paid a fair wage? Were the farmers paid a fair price? Then, if it turns out the coffee is not fair trade, can I get fair trade coffee 3 doors down at the other coffee shop?
